Kundli Milan is the foundation of Vedic marriage compatibility analysis. The system, called Ashtakoot Guna Milan, was developed by sage Maharishi Garga and is detailed in the classical text Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.
It evaluates 8 critical aspects (called "koots") of compatibility, totaling 36 points. The higher the score, the better the match.
Why is Kundli Milan Important?
Marriage is not just emotional — it's a long-term partnership affecting every aspect of life: health, finance, children, mental peace. Kundli Milan checks compatibility at multiple levels:
- Mental and intellectual alignment
- Physical and sexual compatibility
- Family planning prospects
- Financial harmony
- Health of children
- Long-term relationship stability
The 8 Koots (Categories)
1. Varna Koot — 1 Point
Tests: Spiritual and ego compatibility
Based on the moon sign (Rashi), each person is assigned to one of 4 varnas: Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, or Shudra. The bride's varna should be equal or lower than the groom's.
- Brahmin: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
- Kshatriya: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
- Vaishya: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
- Shudra: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
2. Vashya Koot — 2 Points
Tests: Mutual influence and dominance
Determines who has natural influence in the relationship. Based on rashi groupings: Manav (human), Vanchar (forest animals), Chatushpad (four-legged), Jalachar (water creatures), Keet (insects).
3. Tara Koot — 3 Points
Tests: Health and well-being
Calculated by counting nakshatras from groom's nakshatra to bride's. Result is divided by 9. Auspicious results: 3, 5, 7. Inauspicious: 1, 4. Most matches get full marks here.
4. Yoni Koot — 4 Points
Tests: Physical and sexual compatibility
Each nakshatra represents an animal yoni (cow, horse, lion, snake, dog, cat, rat, deer, monkey, mongoose, tiger, buffalo, elephant, sheep). Same yoni = best score. Enemy yonis get 0 points.
5. Graha Maitri Koot — 5 Points
Tests: Mental and intellectual compatibility
Compares the rashi lords of both partners. Friend planets give 5 points, neutral give 3, enemies give 0. This is one of the most critical koots — without mental compatibility, marriage struggles long-term.
6. Gana Koot — 6 Points
Tests: Temperament compatibility
Three ganas: Dev (divine), Manushya (human), Rakshas (demonic). Same gana = full marks. Dev-Manushya = 5 marks. Rakshas with Dev = 0 marks (problematic).
7. Bhakoot Koot — 7 Points
Tests: Financial and family prosperity
Calculated based on the relative position of moon signs. Some combinations (called Shadashtak, Dwirdwadash, Nava-Pancham) score 0 and are considered inauspicious for prosperity.
8. Nadi Koot — 8 Points
Tests: Health of children, genetic compatibility
The most important koot. Three nadis: Aadi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta), Antya (Kapha). Same nadi (called Nadi Dosh) = 0 points. This is considered very serious as it can affect childbirth and child health.
Total Score Interpretation
After all 8 koots, total possible score is 36 points. Here's how to interpret:
- 0-17 points: Not recommended. Marriage may face severe challenges.
- 18-24 points: Acceptable. Standard threshold for marriage approval.
- 25-32 points: Very good match. Strong compatibility.
- 33-36 points: Excellent. Rare and highly auspicious match.
Critical Doshas to Check (Beyond Score)
Nadi Dosh
If both partners have the same Nadi, this is considered serious. However, it gets cancelled if:
- Both have same rashi but different nakshatras
- Both have same nakshatra but different padas
- Either has the same lord for nakshatra and rashi
Bhakoot Dosh
Inauspicious 6-8, 5-9, or 2-12 placements between rashi positions. Cancellations:
- If rashi lords are friends
- If both have same rashi lord
- If Navamsa lords are friendly
Manglik Dosh
Separate from 36 gun calculation. Both partners' Manglik status must be checked. Read the full Manglik guide.
What Kundli Milan Doesn't Tell You
Many people make the mistake of relying ONLY on 36 gun matching. Kundli Milan is necessary but not sufficient. It does NOT account for:
- Education and career compatibility
- Family background and values
- Personal habits and lifestyle
- Communication style
- Long-term goals alignment
- Mutual respect and love
A high score with poor real-world compatibility is worse than a moderate score with strong personal alignment.
Beyond Ashtakoot — What Else to Check
A complete marriage analysis includes:
- Manglik Dosh — Mars placement check
- 7th house analysis — Marriage house in both kundlis
- 7th house lord — Strength and placement
- Venus and Jupiter — Karakas of marriage and spouse
- Navamsa chart (D9) — Most important for marriage outcomes
- Dasha analysis — Current planetary periods
- Marriage timing — Auspicious year prediction
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Rejecting matches under 18 points without checking dosh cancellations.
Mistake 2: Approving matches over 25 points without checking individual doshas.
Mistake 3: Using only online calculators (they don't apply cancellation rules).
Mistake 4: Ignoring Navamsa chart in marriage analysis.
Mistake 5: Not consulting a qualified astrologer for serious doshas.
Final Word from Pandit Ji
Kundli Milan is a powerful tool when used correctly. It identifies potential challenges so couples can prepare, perform remedies, or make informed decisions. But astrology should support — not replace — genuine compatibility, love, and family blessings.
If your match has low score, do not lose hope. Many doshas have classical cancellations. And many high-scoring matches have failed due to poor real-world compatibility. Get a complete analysis, not just a number.
